Erwin Sick inis a large European manufacturer of sensors and sensor solutions, offering a wide portfolio of more than 40, products aimed at an astonishing spectrum of industrial applications.

It is perhaps less well known in the world of geospatial lidar than some others, so LIDAR Magazine seized avidly on an invitation to visit the company. Here is what they discovered. We were hosted by Carolin Baumgartner, strategic product manager, 3D lidar sensors, and Harald Weber, head of product management, ranging.

The location decision to Waldkirch was an interesting one. InSick tried in vain to obtain a loan from the Free State of Bavaria to build up the company. As it grew, Sick received a series of awards.

It is a small unit that has good performance and reliability for a low price I thought it was going to cost double of what they are charging.

This sensor is outdoor rated however there is also an indoor version called the TiM3xx.

Overall I am very impressed with this sensor. It performed very well in my tests sorry you need to wait for my final post for the data and did similar or better, then some of the larger LIDARS. There is a connector mount built into the bottom of the sensor that can rotate allowing the cables power and ethernet to either come out from the bottom of the sensor, from the back, or any weird angle in-between.

This is really nifty and I liked it.

The only thing to watch out for is that the rotating connector mount can move around so you need to think about holding your cables in place and strain relieving them. There are two primary ways to get data from this sensor; ethernet and USB. In order to get to the USB port a side plastic flap needs to be opened. This sensor reports data at 1 degree resolution however the reported value is based on the average of multiple data points.

This helps give a clean output signal. They still feel strong but threading a connector on them is not as smooth. The TiM has a range of 10 meters, while the TiM has a range 25 meters. I would also recommend this sensor for the most detailed mapping work of this group especially if you get the high-resolution models.

The LMS is a similar size and weight it actually weighs a little more. The most obvious differences are the multiple returns, larger field of view, ethernet communications, slanted top, and the switch to a small circular connector as opposed to the old large cubes.

I like the new connectors since they are smaller and they do not require a gasket that would easy fall off in the old connector in order to be rain proof. I will admit that there was something satisfying about putting in the old connector that is now missing I am nostalgic. I am guessing there are also changes to the laser beam shape, size, etc.

From personal experience I have seen these sensors survive very rough conditions and handling. I know of a case where a large and expensive robot flipped over and was saved by the LIDAR mounted to its front.

It has 6 inbuilt sensors that detect if the LIDAR screen is dirty and no longer safe to be relied on. This sensor can also listen for up to 5 returns from a laser pulse. This is important for when only part of a laser beam hits an obstacle and there is more information returned.

This situation is commonly encountered with rain and dust situations. The LMS has a bunch of other features including digital inputs, digital outputs, and the ability to sync multiple sensors so they do not interfere with each other.

In my data collection the LMS kept having some random spurious points. I am not sure why. It might have been some of my settings, or something to do with the multiple returns. Here is an image showing the field of view and range for this sensor:.
